A new anti-ageing approach

Bio-remodelling is an innovative approach to anti-ageing which counteracts skin laxity of the face and in areas traditionally difficult to treat such as the neck, décolleté, hands and arms.

Profhilo is a very hydrating skin boost that is particularly effective at alleviating dry and crepey skin, elevating fine lines and boosting collagen producing cells deep in the dermis.

What is Profhilo?

Profhilo is a skin booster made from hyaluronic acid for skin that is losing its elasticity and firmness with age. It creates a fresh natural look and softens fine lines. Profhilo is not a dermal filler it is a hyaluronic acid gel, one of the latest innovations to treat skin laxity by skin bio-remodelling.

How does it work
Profhilo stimulates the production of new collagen in the skin by a slow release of hyaluronic acid.

The treatment protocol
Results are visible after only 2 sessions 4-6 weeks apart. Treatment results last for up to six months. Profhilo can work as a treatment on its own or in combination with other cosmetic treatments.

Complications
As with any injectable treatment there are minor risks, including bruising and swelling, as well as infection, allergic reaction, vascular compromise and nerve damage; although IBSA claims these are rare.

Contraindications
Contraindications include patients with bleeding disorders, immune compromised disorders and those with unrealistic expectations.

Conclusion and treatment areas
Profhilo does not create the volume replacement associated with dermal fillers, it creates volume in the tissue where it is needed due to its high spreadability. It is good to treat challenging areas such as the eyes, neck, chest and hands.

When treating the submalar area, IBSA has developed a five point protocol called BAP (Bio Aesthetic Point) Technique. Which involves five bolus injections of 0.2mm on each side of the face. The injection sites are identified using a selection criteria which aims to reduce risks to the blood vessels and nerves and maximise efficacy through diffusion.

“As we age, the skin’s ability to produce collagen decreases. Profhilo is strategically placed at key points to create an airbrushed effect softening fine lines.

“The treatment is especially effective at treating those areas prone to laxity like the eyes, neck, chest and décolletage.

“More traditional dermal fillers aren’t suitable for these areas as the delicate skin makes it difficult to inject and to control the distribution, but these areas are also especially prone to ageing.”

Profhilo Review

I was totally new to Profhilo when I had my first treatment this summer, but I loved the idea of giving my skin a boost to stimulate my own collagen and elastin cells. I mostly wanted to address the increasing number of fine lines, especially around my eyes and mouth and hoped to get a little of the dewy glow of youth back on my middle-aged skin.

The procedure

To start off Liz marked five points on each side of my face – these were the sites where the injections would be placed.  The hyaluronic acid gel was injected into the skin which did cause a degree of stinging, especially around the chin area.  The pain only really lasts during the injections and quickly passes. So you need to be brave for a short time.

Looking in the mirror afterward I could see ten lumps that looked rather like mosquito bites. These lumps are at the sites of the injections.  The good news is that they gradually disappear as the hyaluronic acid gets absorbed into the lower dermis.  After a few hours they were only just noticeable and by morning completely gone.

The results

I was excited to see how my skin would look after the treatment. Unlike Botox or dermal fillers you do not get an instant visual improvement.  With Profhilo you have to be patient and wait for the collagen cells to do their thing. I would say after three-weeks or so, I started to notice my skin looked a little plumper with a healthy glow particularly around my cheekbones.

After 4-weeks, I returned to Liz for a follow up appointment and another set of injections. I was ready for the sting this time and it didn’t seems so painful the second time around.  The lumps quickly disappeared and over the next month I really started to notice an improvement around my eyes and cheeks and a general healthy glow.

I would certainly recommend Profhilo as a skin boost and a way of tacking tricky areas like under your eyes, neck, décolleté and back of hands.  I think it would work best combined with Botox as a way of keeping your skin looking fresh and healthy to combat the natural effects of ageing.
